Nucleosynthesis of light elements inside thermally pulsing AGB stars I. The case of intermediate-mass stars
نویسنده
چکیده
The structural and nucleosynthetic evolution of 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7M stars with two metallicities (Z = 0.005 and 0.02) has been computed in detail, from the early pre-main sequence phase up to the thermally pulsing (TP) AGB phase or the onset of off-center carbon burning. Typically 10 to 20 thermal pulses have been followed for each TP-AGB object. This homogeneous and quite large set of models allows us to present an overview of the thermal pulse properties as well as of the nucleosynthesis accompanying the TP-AGB phase of intermediate-mass stars. More specifically, after a brief description of the previous evolutionary stages, predictions are given for the isotopic ratios involving C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Al and Si. Also the surface abundances of Li, F and Na are reported. As the asymptotic phase of the thermal pulses has been reached for each star, we also indicate how these abundances will probably evolve until the stars completely loose their envelope, by including the evolution of the nucleosynthesis itself.

It is well known that thermally pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch stars with low mass play a relevant role in the chemical evolution. They have synthesized about 30% of the galactic carbon and provide an important contribution to the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements (A>80). The relevant nucleosynthesis site is the He-rich intermediate zone (less than 10 M⊙), where α(2α, γ) C reactions and slow n...
متن کاملMg and Al Yields from Low and Intermediate Mass AGB stars
We investigate the production of aluminium and the heavy magnesium isotopes in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) models. We evolve models with a wide range in initial mass (1 > (M⊙) > 6) and composition (Z = 0.02,0.008,0.004). We evolve the models from the pre-main sequence, through all intermediate stages including the core helium flash, to near the end of the thermally-pulsing AGB phase. We then ...

We present a set of models of AGB stars with initial mass larger than 5 M⊙ as obtained with the FRANEC code. It includes model of Z=0.02 and Z=0.001, with and without mass loss.
متن کاملYields from single AGB stars
In order to understand the composition of planetary nebulae we first need to study the nucleosynthesis occurring in the progenitor star during the thermally-pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) phase. I present an overview of single AGB evolution, with an emphasis on the mixing processes that alter the envelope composition, followed by a discussion of the stellar yields available from single A...
متن کاملNucleosynthesis of Elements in Low to Intermediate Mass Stars through the AGB Phase
We present a review of the main phases of stellar evolution with particular emphasis on the nucleosynthesis and mixing mechanisms in lowand intermediate-mass stars. In addition to explicit studies of the effects of the first, second and third dredge-up, we also discuss cool bottom processing and hot bottom burning.
